ABOUT | History
Beautiful Gate is part of God’s expression of love and compassion to vulnerable children and families, say founders Toby and Aukje Brouwer. They themselves were touched by this part of God’s heart in 1988: “While sitting in the comfort of our Dutch home we watched a television documentary about street children in South Africa. And it was the bleakness in the eyes of these children that filled our hearts with compassion. Compassion that lead to prayers and prayers that motivated us into action”. As a result of that in 1991, after three years of preparation, the Brouwer-family moved to Cape Town, South Africa. There they joined the international missions movement Youth with a Mission and started working with a local organisation called Cape Town City Mission.
Three years later they saw their vision of reaching out in love and compassion fulfilled with the founding of Beautiful Gate as a registered NGO and the start of a project for street children in Cape Town. Today Beautiful Gate has grown into an association with organisations in South Africa, Lesotho and Zambia.
